Top 5 Interesting Facts About Eyeglasses
By Hillary Lynne Rubin
We're back with the top list! Did you miss us? We missed you! We are off to a great start in 2009. During our break I pondered something - what funky facts are there out in the world about and vision? I scoured the internet to see what I could find. After a good week of researching, I came up with the five best interesting facts about eyes, eyeglasses, and the like!

5: While the origin of is relatively unknown and widely debated, reading glasses first appeared on the scene in Italy around 1260 C.E. They were initially designed to help the elderly in their quest for reading. The reading glasses were insanely popular very quickly but there was one drawback - arms had not been invented for the prescriptio and the frames kept slipping down the nose! The Spanish tried to remedy this by tying ribbons to the frames and then wrapping them around their ears but the local folks were not so keen on that idea.

4: The human eyeball weighs approximately one ounce. Imagine all the work your eyes do: reading, discovering, watching TV, refracting light, being pretty...etc. They do all this work within one ounce. Amazing! The human body truly astounds us!

3: Wear a gold earring or eyeglasses? Personally, I would choose but sailors once believed that wearing a gold earring would help to improve their eyesight. We here at GlassesUSA are a little unsure ______continued.

2: Sunglasses came on the scene in 1929 when a young innovator, Sam Foster, convinced the Woolworth's store on the Atlantic City Boardwalk to sell his new brand of sunglasses - FosterGrant. They became an instant sensation in the 1930's when worn by the era's most popular movie stars! The American culture has Sam Foster to thank for making something like eye protection from UVA and UVB rays look so cool and hip!

It's hard to pick one last fact that could possibly be more interesting than wearing a gold earring to help your eyesight but here goes...

1: Thomas Jefferson had more than I do. During his presidency, Jefferson ordered from Philadelphia optician, John McAllister. This grew into a two year union where Jefferson would instruct McAllister to fashion glasses for him for any occasion. The process would take about two weeks to manufacture each frame. On occasion, McAllister would send President Jefferson a pair of frames that Jefferson was not too pleased about. The result would be a written letter and a diagram of exactly what kind of eyeglass frame the president would like - hand drawn by Thomas Jefferson himself.

Now, go. Go and use this information at any trivia night you may come across.

Dell also has one if I'm not all wrong. This is just a tad cooler tho. People will ask me: Whats that? And I'll go: It's my notebook-holder with an integrated keyboard painted in a smooth ninja-like color.

But who is going to carry a laptop, then carry this around with it. You might as well bold a handle on top of a desktop.

HP has had a docking station that does the exact same out for at least 2 years.

I remember Dell had a docking station for my old D800 that did the same thing. It was usefull for the fact that I did not have to worry about any of the cables and it raised the LCD to a level more akin to a desktop monitor. Nice to see a version that can be used by any(?) laptop.

I really like the fact that its portable, the Dell vesion was a monster and not portable at all, and it did not have the built in keyboard.

hmmmm maybe it was not "the same" but the idea was there.

I just buy a spare keybaord form e-bay for less than $10 after a year or so when they start to show up in good numbers. Saved me when my cursor key stuck a few months ago I was able to pull my spare out of storage and swap it on. Much better than having to use an external keyboard.

Guys I think he's kidding about the posture.

Have some leftover candy and relax!

I use an external KB for gaming on mine so I'm not putting the excessive wear on the "home" keys.

I like the whole concept, especially since it protects the keys when folded up.

Carrying an extra KB is cumbersome, but this will ease that a bit and will likely survive longer on the road.

I had the exact same thought. I've used a laptop exclusively since 1998 and don't sit hunched over or have any spinal problems. I've noticed that most people seem to think they need toslide the laptop back and plug in an extra keyboard and mouse, maybe that caaounts for part of it. Or maybe because they sit their chairs too high, every time I sit down at some other chair I end up banging my knees on the table/desk, those up too high chairs would make one hunch.

I'm not quite sure why you have to hunch to use a laptop, when I put mine on a table or desk I don't think I hunch, but perhaps I do. If you have to hunch to use it, why not ether get this, or get a desktop for home use. I use my desktop for gaming and other entertainment, and my laptop for working (as a writer I like to write other places than my dorm room).
